When using conclusion spotting for answer selection, is it a mistake to just look at the answer choice conclusions only and ignore the rest of the argument structure until we narrowed it down (if that's necessary at all)? Its been working for me but that may be coincidence.

Not a mistake; in fact, that's the entire point of the techinique. You can very quickly determine that some (maybe four!) answers cannot be parallel, no matter what else they say.
