What is wrong with D? Is the word "lost" in D not inferable so D is factually wrong? If we change D into "served as evidence that the claim that the intellectual skills required and fostered by the literary media are being ERODED is unwarranted", would it be right? Thanks Dave!

I'd take a more structural approach. Stories about what happened several centuries ago cannot provide evidence about what is happening today. Such stories may suggest, or attempt to show, but they certainly don't qualify as evidence.
