I have the same conditionals written as you do - but I thought that B -> /F (not F) would need to be parallel with the polarity of the answer (in this case, E -> /A (not A)). Why is A the answer if the polarity and contrapositives don't match between the reasoning in the passage and the reasoning in A?

Nope! This question is a great example of the fact that in Parallel Questions, the polarity doesn't matter; it's only the logical structure that matters.
Really, the question of polarity could be considered purely one of abbreviations (that is to say, for example, you could always call any positive a double negative, and vice versa). Or consider it this way: one could absolutely correctly capture the logical structure of the passage with the following abbreviation:
NOT S(tayed above freezing) → NO I(mpatiens) [bc they're dead!] → NO B(looms)
See what I mean? Polarity doesn't matter. Consistent logical structure is the only thing that does, here.
