So I got this question wrong but I wasted a lot of time trying to figure out why A couldn't be an answer as well.
Can you help me understand the difference between A and E?
My diagram for A was
W->S and S' -> W'
E was
S->W and W'->S'
So E is a perfect match to the text.
But my question is would A have been the answer if E did not exist? Because the counter positive of A, if they didn't smelt it then they didn't have a distinct word, works for me too.

No. (A) is of no help to this conclusion.
We're trying to prove that a metal was not smelted, and (A) doesn't give us any criteria for proving that. (A) could only help you prove that a metal was smelted (we'd know it was if they had a word for it).
