In this case I clearly see that it is an analogy error but that still left me with A and C. How did you choose between those two? The only difference I see is that A uses the word "reasoning" and C uses "argument", but that still didn't leave me with a clear answer choice.

Good news—the salient difference between answer choices will never be a synonym, so we can focus on structure and not semantics.
In (A), we're saying the professor is arguing against someone. But she isn't. She's making a claim, not disputing one.
See what I mean?
