Since this is an NA question, I thought D was little too strong. But if we negate A - "Whether or not a work of literature is a tragedy should (not -this gets removed) depend on the characteristics of its audience," then the argument doesn't make sense (i.e., we need this).

Two things:
1. There are no characteristics of the audience that are required to call a work of literature a tragedy. The protagonist must be noble.
2. Whether or not something should be true is not necessary for an assessment of whether it is true. I should be a billionaire, and yet . . . .
