I have trouble with trying to put it into formal logic. Because the argument says that the shortage prevented the variety. And then we concluded about detriment. Then this says that -V -> D and -D -> V. The answer choice A (though seemed to me as the correct one) was reversed. Can you please correct me?

I think your central problem is in trying to symbolically convey a relationship that isn't conditional.
The argument says chains are bad, because there's less variety. That assumes that variety is good (which is what (A) says).
