If B wasn't there would you say A would be the right answer? I thought A could be since there is a decrease in the number of popular contemp books sold therefore decrease in profit and we certainly can't assume anything else other than that.
I'm not sure that I follow your reasoning here. But I'll say this:
(A) couldn't be the answer to this question, because it does provide help in resolving the paradox. If libraries don't have the newest popular novels, that helps explain why there are fewer books being read nowadays (you can't borrow the hot ones for free!) while also helping to explain why bookstore profits are up (you can't borrow the hot ones for free!).
I'm sorry, I don't understand this question. You must never assume anything, and I particularly don't recommend assuming that people go to the library to buy books (which is both unhelpful and counterintuitive).
