It might help to think of it this way: in order to prove that Solution X works, we need some evidence that it in fact works. We don't need to know that it's the only thing that works, or that there's not some better solution. We'd only need those sorts of ideas if we were trying to prove that Solution X is the only or the best solution.
Same thing here. We need to know that 3 months works as a test. We don't need to know that it's the only or the best amount of time for a test.
