The increase in the demand for a consumer product = increase in sales of those imported wines?

I still don't understand your explanation for why E is the correct answer. I chose D but I don't understand why E is correct, specifically in comparison to D or to C (I was stuck between C and D).

Hm. Let's try this; what did you like abut (C) and (D)?

I liked them because they both discussed the quality of wine. The answer that I came up with explained the contradiction on the basis of quality. I didn't agree with C that consumers will "forgo" other purchases but I kept it because it mentioned a superiority in wine. D made sense to me because I thought that higher price = higher quality and wine is always in demand, especially if it is foreign.

There's nothing in the passage to tell us about the quality of the wines under discussion. Unless we know about the quality of these wines, no statement about quality can explain anything about their relative sales figures.
It's like this:
Paul is tall, but he also plays basketball.
Explain.
(C) Tall people are good at knitting.
(D) Basketball players are as good at knitting as tall people are.
(E) Being tall is compatible with playing basketball.
As with the issue of quality in 22, the issue of knitting doesn't help explain how a tall person plays basketball—it's just beyond the scope of the passage. The issue is how tall people can play ball (or in 22, how demand for two things can increase at the same time).

Hi Dave,
I can see why E. is corret, but I was curious why A. wouldn't work.
