I rewatched the parallel video for this question.
I took out B and C because it was not prescriptive like the passage.
Is the "not" in D a cue? Since the conclusion said "though there is nothing wrong with A, know you're getting A not B" just the same way answer D says "nothing wrong with A, but if you befriend A it's not necessarily B"

Yes! (Sort of).
The "not" does neatly set up the similarity, but you could, for example, reword (D) to say "...a charming friend may nevertheless be without virtue."
So the structural idea of (D) is the same, and would be even if we used slightly different semantics to get there.
That said, it is often true that we use the same sorts of words to express similar structural frames, so it's totally useful to be drawn to an answer because of that similarity. Just keep in mind that the logical structure, not the word choice, will determine the right answer.
