I assume for answer C just because it has "specific" in it and "near future" doesn't sound very specific to me, it shouldn't distract me from the $=# part, correct?
Does getting distracted by the word "specific" mean I am still reading semantically?

Well, context matters.
If you said "I'll pay you back the money I owe you in the near future," that wouldn't count as specific.
But when the argument is talking about geologic time, "the near future" is very specific, compared to the hundreds of millions of years in discussion.
I do think part of the lesson is not to get too hung up on a relative term. It may be a good reason for deciding between two close answer choices, but it's probably not a good enough reason by itself to eliminate an otherwise good answer (in other words, take out the word "specific," and (C) is gorgeous, right? That's what I'm talking about).
