Hey Dave, I was little thrown off by answer choice B. I think the reason being, was the the word surprised appearing in the example and then the word inevitable appearing in the phrase. I think this was probably the case of just not having a strong grasp of what the question wanted from me, so I latched on to the first answer I saw that seemed to have words that were seemingly at odds(that's even debatable). Any advice on avoiding this kind of mistake? I saw that you're studying for finals, and I know the question is not very specific so it could be a hassle answering so don't rush to respond to this. Good luck with finals

I totally get you pausing for a bit with (B) for the reason you've given. But in order to choose (B), you'd have to say that it's closer to the passage than (E) is, which seems super difficult to defend. [In this instance, I get rid of (B) because although the saying might be construed as inappropriate regarding the friends' behavior, it equally can be construed as an appropriate assessment of Harold's behavior. So I don't know if it's inappropriate or not. There's no such ambiguity in correct answer (E)]
My general tip for confusing answer choices is to leave them in mental limbo: if the other four choices are wrong, then the confusing one is your answer. If there's a clearly right answer elsewhere, then you don't have to worry about the confusing response at all. Hope that helps.
P.S. Thanks for the well wishes! Tomorrow's my last of four finals. I'm avoiding studying for it, quite frankly.
