I was stuck between A and D. Will you explain why D is the answer choice versus A? My assumption was ice melting causes cracks which results into earthquakes. So to make this more likely to be the case I was stuck between those choices.

You've self-diagnosed!
You (like the author of this argument) assumed that cracks cause earthquakes. (D) is correct because is asserts that assumption. (A) is incorrect because it doesn't give us any reason to think melting ice causes earthquakes (only that melting ice causes cracks).

Ok. I felt like the stimulus made its point so it seemed redundant to repeat what was said in the answer choice because I thought it was stated. Maybe I’m thinking too much into this. However, in general for strengthening questions are we strengthening the assumption or the conclusion?

An answer choice to a Strengthen question that just repeats information from the argument will always be incorrect (although I can't think of any instance of such an answer choice appearing).
Strengthen by asserting the assumption (see this video for more on that).
