What is the original explanation of why the media devoted more coverage?
I was thrown off due to the language "alternative"
Is A wrong because it mentions crime rate?

The disputed explanation is in the second sentence: It's not because X, it's actually because Y. Y is an alternative to X.
(A) is incorrect for at least two reasons:
1. We're not told that they devote more time than is justified.
2. The sentence we've been asked about is the conclusion. It isn't evidence of anything.
That second reason is by far the most important. It's the kind of structural reading that makes you fast and efficient, so that you waste no time debating the semantics of an answer that can't possibly be right.
Think of it this way: if you're looking to buy a new car, you wouldn't spend any time at all considering a motorcycle, no matter what features and benefits the motorcycle may have—you don't want a motorcycle, you want a car!
In the same way, structural reading helps you avoid answer choices that are of the wrong type, thereby saving you time.
