Can you please explain why D is wrong? I thought that if we said open fireplaces also produce creosote then it would weaken the argument because then the question would be "if they both deposit creosote what makes wood burning more dangerous? It was between C and D for me so I'm just curious as to why not D? Thanks in advance...

I agree with your assessment, except you didn't follow it all the way through. Yes, I totally agree that the question would be "if they both deposit creosote what makes wood burning more dangerous?" But the answer is there in the passage: wood burning is more dangerous because it deposits more creosote. That's the whole basis for the argument.
