For question number 3 I didn't chose answer B because in the passage it reads "the soundest indicator" but did not use the word accurate. The way the question asked for "specific information" made me think that the word "soundest" was not close enough to "accurate" to be the right answer.
Other times in reading comp and logical reasoning word choice like this makes a difference in correct answers. Am I just overanalyzing this question or is there a way to tell when to focus on things like this?
It is entirely appropriate—indeed, to be expected—for a correct answer to use a synonym rather than repeating a word from the passage. So we'll never shy away from an instance where that happens.
More good news; you'll never have to choose between two synonyms to decide which is "better". The test has never asked anyone to do that.
So you can feel calm and confident about working toward deriving ansswers that match the meaning of the text (keeping in mind the language cues we've discussed, which will help make you faster).
hi dave i got question 2 wrong because i thought the welfare they were talkig about was in line 6, any way of knowing which work they are talking about specifically next time?
The test writers believe that the instances of the word "welfare" within the first paragraph are all used in the same sense—in other words, the test is hard, but it won't try to play dirty tricks like asking you intentionally misleading questions, or questions that have multiple valid answers as choices.
For example, if you had a word used in one sense in line 6, and in another sense in line 8, they would direct you specifically to which mention they're asking you about.
Since they asked about the blanket area of paragraph one, they are indicating that they believe all uses of the word within that paragraph to be the same.
And, while it's certainly possible to read the word in line 6 in isolation as though it might refer to wealth, such a reading is contextual, and not specifically directed by the text itself. Where the text does provide direction (lines 7 through 19), the specific declaration of the word's meaning is in reference to overall quality of life.
Since the question explicitly asked what the most specific reference of the word is, that's the meaning we need to pick.
In contrast, the "wealth" reading (while not without its reasonably deduced support!) is made without any specific reference by the author.
By the way, my reading of it was that the author did in fact intend the same usage in both instances: that GDP is intended to reflect welfare, but it isn't broad enough to really reflect welfare, in other words.
