I was having difficulty choosing between C and E. Ended up being the right answer, but I'm having trouble distinguishing the two.
Is it because E is more vague and does not make mention of the idea of "evolving" and uses the term "related?"

Yes; you've got it.
In (C), we've got a prescription that's nowhere in the passage (the author doesn't want us to reclassify anything). (C) also pins a definite relationship on the trio; in our passage, the author didn't calim anything stronger than "they may be linked...".
When you have two answer choices remaining, focus on the difference/s between them; that should illuminate the correct response.
Happy practicing!
