Ordering + Grouping Combo Games

Hi Dave,

PrepTest 10, Game #4....this is a combination of an ordering and a grouping game. Do you mind going through the game to see how best to approach it?

It is not a hard game by any means, but there are a few inferences that I wouldn't think to make in a non-combo game and some inferences that are counter-intuitive to the regular binary games (like if there's a placeholder for Z/X in the unselected category, then we need to keep in mind that both of them cannot be unselected, one always has to be on). I also feel that my diagram is not as well organized as it should be. Do you recommend reviewing these combo games or do they not appear in the recent LSATs? I don't remember coming across any combo game in the Games manual.

Thank you.

Hey, there,

I've answered your question in this week's mailbag. Today's session is listed as 2012-08-06.

You'll notice that there are vertical lines running through the playback bar; each line represents a section break, so you can quickly jump to your question if you'd like (although you may have to wait for the entire video to load in order to navigate within playback).

Best,

d

P.S. I didn't address it - only because it wasn't part of your original question, so I missed it - but I'm afraid that what you've said about Z/X isn't true - it's entirely possible to have Z and X not chosen (e.g., M/Z/X/P all off). And you're right! Since the rules tell us that exactly two of each type are selected (notice that I overlooked that rule in my incorrect - and now crossed-off - answer above), it's not possible to have two Vivaldis off - two of the three are on, and the other is off! In this way, the game is like all other binary grouping games.

Hi Dave,

Thank you for the insightful answer, I found the answering machine game that you referred to (Liam, Pasquale and Hildy) in case someone else wants to give it a shot it is PT30, game #2.

As far as your comment that regarding Z/X, the possibility of these two variables not being chosen...I am a little bit confused. The game states that two must be selected from the Vivaldi group. If both Z/X are not chosen, then we only have Y to choose. What am I missing?

Oops!

It's not you; it's me! You nailed it, and i overlooked the rule from the setup telling us that exactly two of each type are selected!

Given that restriction, you're entirely correct! Sorry for messing that up - and thanks for the correction! (I've amended my answer above accordingly).
