I was having a hard time with the wording of the question and I decided that it was an inference question. I still got the right answer but what should I do in instances where I don't understand what kind of question it is and how to go about it before reading the passage and looking at the answer choices?

First, familiarize yourself with the common question phrasings (they're at the start of each question type introduction, and are also in written form here).
Second, know that the test writers occassionally use the word "proposition" in place of the word "principle."
Together, those two cover over 98% (I'm working from memory) of all LR questions. For the very, very few questions that do not conform to the types listed above, skip them, then come back, read carefully, and follow the instructions of the question (like you would in a Games question).
